Industry NewsMüller UK & Ireland develops logistics hub at Skelmersdale to strengthen dairy supply chain
Müller UK & Ireland has announced plans to develop an in-house logistics hub at its Skelmersdale site in West Lancashire, England, reinforcing the company's strategy to expand dairy processing and export capabilities, eDairyNews reported.
The investment marks a significant step in strengthening supply chain operations whilst positioning British-made dairy ingredients, particularly powdered milk products, for growing domestic and international demand.
The Skelmersdale hub will accommodate up to 65 milk collection vehicles and support daily farm milk collections across the region. The facility centralises logistics operations to improve efficiency and provide greater control over transport and fleet management. The project is expected to create up to 90 new jobs, including roles for drivers, vehicle technicians, trainers and logistics support staff.
Rob Hutchison, CEO of Müller UK & Ireland, said the development reflects the company's commitment to building a resilient dairy business. Hutchison said the new hub is designed to set new standards in milk drying, dairy ingredients and logistics, supporting both UK customers and international markets. He emphasised the investment will help create long-term opportunities for the region whilst strengthening Müller's ability to serve global demand.
Alongside the logistics expansion, Müller is proposing to relocate fresh milk and cream production currently based at Skelmersdale to other sites within its UK network. The company confirmed the proposed changes could place up to 90 existing roles at risk, with consultation processes now underway with affected employees.
The timing aligns with broader dairy consumption trends, with processed dairy consumption expected to rise approximately 6 per cent in developed markets by 2033.
