Industry NewsLidl opens first pub at Dundonald store following £500,000 fit-out investment
German discount retailer Lidl is preparing to open its first ever pub, The Middle Ale, at its Dundonald store in Co Down, Northern Ireland, following a £500,000 fit-out of a 645 sq ft venue designed to navigate the region's restrictive alcohol licensing framework.
The Irish News reports that the project represents a creative response to Northern Ireland's 'surrender principle', under which supermarkets must acquire an existing licence rather than apply for a new one. By opening a pub, Lidl secures the legal right to operate an adjacent off-licence section at the site.
The fit-out was delivered by MMG Contracts and Marcon, with the interior designed by Gordon Devenney of O'Donnell O'Neill. Construction commenced last month following Lidl's successful High Court defence against opponents who argued the retailer was exploiting a legal loophole.
The Middle Ale will operate from its own premises with a separate entrance for the off-licence. Lidl will staff and run the pub directly, recruiting a bar manager, duty manager and bar and off-sales attendants across eight new positions. The retailer established a dedicated trading entity, The Dunlady Arms Limited, in March 2020.
"We've been working with our fantastic construction and fit-out partners, as well as one of the top hospitality interior designers on the island of Ireland, to bring a unique offering to Dundonald which reflects our brand," said Gordon Cruikshanks, Lidl's Regional Managing Director in Northern Ireland.
The Middle Ale will stock Lidl's own range of beers, wines and spirits for on-site consumption, alongside bar snack options, with an opening date confirmed for next month.
