Lough Eske Castle seeks permission for bar extension and pavilion fitout

Lough Eske Castle Hotel, a luxury wedding and hospitality venue in Donegal, has submitted plans to Donegal County Council for a 95 sqm bar extension and a contemporary pavilion within its courtyard.

The development is designed to nearly double the existing bar area and improve operational flexibility beyond the summer season.

RMI Architects prepared the design statement, describing the project as “modest and visually subordinate structure, taking cues from the castle’s established material palette and proportional logic while remaining contemporary and distinctly separate in character.” The pavilion will feature internal seating, bar facilities, a glazed lantern roof, and connections using existing door openings, while retaining current accessibility routes and levels.

The hotel emphasised that the extension will be “positioned within an established courtyard zone that serves the existing bar and associated hospitality functions during the summer season only.” The versatile design will allow for morning or afternoon tea, informal gatherings, and small events, maintaining a “light, elegant and comfortable” atmosphere that balances a garden room aesthetic with operational needs.

The design statement also notes: “While the courtyard offers generous views towards the castle’s northern elevation and surrounding landscaped areas, the absence of enclosed accommodation restricts its operational value outside the summer season. The proposed development addresses this condition by introducing a weather-protected internal space that reinforces the usability of the courtyard while respecting its architectural context.”

Lough Eske Castle has a long history, dating back to the 15th century, with multiple transformations culminating in a luxury hotel reopening in 2007.

Donegal County Council is expected to make a decision on the planning application by February 21, 2026.
