Northern Ireland-headquartered construction company Henry Brothers has completed the refurbishment and expansion of the Endoscopy Unit at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust's Queen's Medical Centre, following a £12.4 million (€14.4 million) investment from NUH and NHS England.

Business Eye reports that the development has transformed the diagnostics unit into a significantly larger and more modern facility, adding a third procedure room to increase capacity and reduce waiting times, particularly for urgent inpatient endoscopy patients awaiting discharge.

The refurbished unit includes an admissions area, preparation rooms, three endoscopy treatment rooms, two recovery bays, a discharge room and dedicated staff facilities. The layout has been designed to provide a continuous patient flow from reception through to discharge, improving privacy, dignity and infection control standards throughout.

"This new unit will make a real difference for our patients," said Dr Andrew Baxter, Deputy Head of Service for Endoscopy at NUH. "It gives us more space, better facilities and greater capacity, which means we can provide care in a more modern environment and improve the experience for people using our services. It will also help us carry out more complex procedures and reduce waits for patients who need endoscopy most urgently."

The project was delivered through the Pagabo Major Construction Works Framework, with Henry Brothers working alongside CPMG Architects, structural and civil engineers Keith Simpson Associates, EP Consulting for mechanical and electrical engineering, and Meller for quantity surveying support.

As well as serving NUH patients, the expanded unit supports complex procedures referred from surrounding hospitals, strengthening specialist regional provision. The upgraded facility also includes improved training space, supporting QMC's continuing role in endoscopy education and innovation. The intention is to seek Joint Advisory Group accreditation following completion of the works.
