Airbus is set to redefine regional travel comfort with its upcoming A220 Airspace cabin, replacing legacy Bombardier design cues with a layout that mirrors the wider Airbus family experience. The cabin will be standard on new deliveries in 2026, with retrofit options following.

Key features include a 5-abreast economy layout with 18.5-inch seats, straight sidewalls for a sense of spaciousness, and the largest single-aisle windows in the market. The cabin supports up to 160 passengers in a single-class A220-300 from 2027, slightly boosting capacity without compromising comfort.

Operational efficiency is enhanced through lighter, larger Airspace XL overhead bins and simplified mechanisms that may shorten turnaround times. Accessibility improvements include reconfigurable lavatories for wheelchair users. Ambient innovations feature under-bin LED lighting capable of over 16 million colours, adaptable to flight phases and airline branding, potentially reducing jetlag.

Connectivity and in-flight services remain contemporary, with options for seatback or overhead screens, in-seat power, and on-demand video. By harmonising the passenger experience across A220, A320neo, and larger Airbus models, operators can offer consistent comfort across short and long-haul routes.

Air Canada will be the first to fly the refreshed cabin in early 2026, signalling a new benchmark for regional aircraft interiors and operational versatility.
